WOMEN TRAVELLERS IN HIMACHAL - INDIA
Women in Himachali society are well respected. They make many
key decisions at the household level and are the guardians of the
family’s wealth in the form of jewelers and their turquoise-studded
head - dresses (peraks) which are passed down from mother to daughter.
Himachali women may be shy of western men, but with women they are
friendly and helpful and can give you a unique insight into Himachali
life.
Traveling alone in India is generally a safe and fascinating experience.
Unfortunately, the increasing exposure to western-style television
programmes has led a small minority of Indian men to believe that
western women are ‘easy to get'. As a result, a few travellers
have experienced unwanted attention. This rarely amounts to more
than a quick grope; a yell should frighten them off and attract
help from passers - by. This type of situation is almost unheard
of in Himachal, although there have been recent reports of incidents
involving soldiers.
There are few simple ways you can avoid unnecessary scrapes and
at the same time help to restore western women’s image. Modest
dress is highly recommended if you want to be respected. In Himachal
the art of subtlety is alive and kicking - flaunting your feminine
attributes will not be appreciated !
Avoid tops that show your shoulders, stomach or back. And keep
your legs covered - long skirts and loose trousers are ideal. In
Dharamsala, the Elegant and practical Tibetan chubas are popular
among travellers.
With regard to trekking, it is best not to go alone as you will
rarely see local women on their own outside their village. If you
are travelling alone, hire a guide for your trek or team up with
other westerners in Dharamsala.
